• Created by Lamar Hunt after he couldn't buy an NFL team.
• First year was the 1960 season.
• In 1959 the NFL had no teams south of Washington DC and only 2 west of Chicago (Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers).
• There were 8 teams in the league:
  • Boston Patriots
  • Buffalo Bills
  • New York Titans (Jets in 1963)
  • Houston Oilers
  • Denver Broncos
  • Dallas Texans (Kansas City Chiefs in 1963)
  • Oakland Raiders
  • Los Angeles Chargers (San Diego in 1961)
• Signed players from small colleges and black only colleges unlike the NFL.
• Signed NFL rejects.
• Many new rules:
  • 2 point conversion
  • Official time on the scoreboard clock
  • TV broadcast-ABC then NBC for $36 million
  • Names on backs of jerseys
  • Shared gate revenue between home and away team.
